Back in January, we explained how to get United States Postal Service postage discounts in 2019 by taking advantage of any or all of the six direct mail promotions being offered by the USPS throughout the year. Each promotion allows you to save 2% on eligible postage, which helps to offset the postage increase that went into effect at the end of January.
The first initiative to launch—the 2019 Tactile, Sensory & Interactive Promotion—is designed to encourage marketers to take advantage of emerging technologies in direct mail that can improve how consumers interact with and respond to mail.
The three featured categories in this promotion are specialty inks, specialty paper, and interactive elements. For example:
- Innovative inks that change appearance when exposed to light, liquids, or a change in pressure or temperature.
- The latest papers and stocks that can be enhanced with scents, sound chips, edible components, and special effects such as filters and holographic images.
- Interactive elements such as pop-ups, infinite folding, and 3D features that the recipient can physically manipulate.
Neuroscience research studies show that engagement, brand recognition, message recall and emotional connections increase when you create a multi-sensory experience and incorporate interactive features into your mail. In other words, you leave a deeper footprint in the brain.
To participate in the 2019 Tactile, Sensory & Interactive Promotion and qualify for the 2% postage discount, registration is required, all mailpieces must be approved by the USPS prior to mailing, and reporting is required after the mailing is complete.
One promotion discount can be applied to a mailpiece or mailing, even if multiple qualifying technologies and/or print treatments are used. Standard Mail letters and flats and Nonprofit Standard Mail letters and flats are eligible. First-Class Mail presort and automation letters, cards and flats, periodicals, bound printed matter, and media mail are not eligible.
